1915年12月12日，袁世凯宣布接受帝位，复辟帝制，废除共和政体，改中华民国为中华帝国，废除民国纪年，改民国五年（公元1916年）为洪宪元年，史称"洪宪帝制"。是年设计铸造了袁世凯高缨像中华帝国洪宪纪元飞龙银币。
